The word Libyan, which is derived from the Libu tribes who lived west of Egypt, was used by the Greeks of non-Punic peoples living west of Egypt. After the Punic Wars both Greeks and Romans used “Libyan” solely of Africans living in Carthaginian territory. The most common name used by Greeks of black-skinned peoples living south of Egypt was Aithiops (lit., sunburned face).
